Short day (7 h light) treatments of plants delayed fruit maturation, and decreased fruit size and number of seeds/fruit in cultivars Saegochu, Texas and Mexico, more so if the treatment began at flower opening than 20 days after flowering, compared with natural daylength controls. The short day treatments had no effect on the subsequent germination of seeds from these cultivars at 25 degrees C.
