Rules for using paraquat for small maize producers in Central America
Turrialba 39(2): 260-274
In 1987, a survey was conducted of the standards which apply to the use of herbicides containing paraquat by smallscale corn farmers in selected regions of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The results highlighted the extent to which small-scale farmers have incorporated this product into their corn farming, demonstrating that, in general, they had not experienced serious problems related to exposure to the product and that they felt relatively secure in terms of the standards for its use. Nonetheless, the results show the importance of continuing with the education and training of smallscale farmers, and of teaching the correct way of carrying out this procedure in order to improve specific aspects of paraquat use.
