Dust and bioaerosol concentrations in two swine-finishing buildings in Kansas

Air quality was assessed in two commercial swine-finishing barns: one naturally ventilated (NV) and one mechanically ventilated (MV). The concentrations of inhalable dust (IDC), respirable dust (RDC), bioaerosols, carbon dioxide (CO2), and ammonia (NH3), as well as the particle size distribution, air temperature, and relative humidity (RH) inside the barns were monitored for 41 consecutive weeks covering three batches of pigs in each barn. The mean (+/- 95% confidence interval) IDC, RDC, total viable particles, and respirable viable particles in the NV barn were 2.19 (+/- 0.61) mg/m3, 0.10 (+/- 0.02) mg/m3, 6.0 x 10(4) (+/- 2.1 x 10(4)) CFU/m3, and 9.8 x 10(3) (+/- 3.8 x 10(3)) CFU/m3, respectively. The corresponding values in the MV barn were 2.13 (+/- 0.52) mg/m3, 0.11 (+/- 0.02) mg/m3, 1.7 x 10(4) (+/- 1.2 x 10(4)) CFU/m3, and 4.5 x 10(3) (+/- 3.6 x 10(3)) CFU/m3, respectively. The two barns did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) in any of the above parameters or in particle size distribution. The IDC and RDC inside the two barns correlated significantly with the weight of pigs (r = 0.42 and 0.55, respectively). The IDC also correlated with the outside air temperature (r = -0.76), and the RDC correlated with the temperature difference between inside and outside air (r = 0.23). Significant but small correlation was found between the total colony forming units inside the barns and the weight of pigs (r = 0.26) and the outside air temperature (r = -0.30).
