Sprays of putrescine-HCl or L-arginine-HCl to trees of the Leccino, either at full bloom or at the beginning of petal fall, increased fruit set but did not affect fruitlet abscission. In contrast, sprays of Co chloride did not increase fruit set but induced apparent parthenocarpy in 67% of fruits, with consequent reductions in fruit size. All substances decreased intercellular ethylene in inflorescences.
