The apparatus "Vel-Appel" is similar to one used in calving (see VB 48, abst. 3987), the only difference being an adjustment to compensate for the greater inclination of the equine croup. It gives warning of prolonged raising of the tail, which takes place three or four times from 4-5 minutes to 1-2 hours before parturition. Signals associated with tail movements during urination or defaecation are eliminated.
