Reference strains of 10 species of free-living amoebae (Naegleria gruberi, Hartmannella vermiformis, Vahlkampfia avara and Acanthamoeba spp.) were cultured on agar plates. Addition of various concentrations of polyols (ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or glycerol) to the agar inhibited excystment and growth to a greater or lesser extent. After 3 weeks on the modified agar most cysts were able to excyst when transferred to a standard medium.
