Forage harvesters equipped with yield mapping devices for precision farming can make an essential contribution to site specific cropping capacity within a field, but low cost technical solutions with sufficient accuracy have to be developed. A volumetric measurement technique was developed by measuring the distance between the feed rollers in front of the cutting cylinder, combined with other measured values, allowing the material flow to be estimated and yield maps can be calculated.
