The results are analysed of five case studies made in New South Wales to determine the cost of cutting green pasture crops (mainly lucerne) with a forage harvester, and carting it for NOT> 1/4 mile for direct feeding or silage. Data on the patterns of fixed and variable costs appear to confirm the view that forage harvesters offer a relatively cheap method of fodder collection.
