Essential oil content is greastest at the flowering stage. Thymol is a main ingredient of the essential oil. The concentration of terpenes lowers, whereas the level of phenols (thymol) increases during plant development. Production of the essential oil is dependent on the essential oil content and the yield of the herbage. The experiments were carried out in 1972 and 1973 with 2 S. hortensis forms: low (French origin) and high (German origin).
