Laboratory studies in the USSR showed that the photoperiodic reaction in Tenebrio molitor at 25 degrees C regulated the rate of pupation. Under photoperiods of less than 12 h relatively short-term delays of pupation occurred, while longer photoperiods induced long-term and stable delays. At a 12-h photoperiod, larvae pupated without delay.
