Persistence of Bacillus larvae W., in alimentary canal of queen honey-bees, Apis mellifera L.

Each of 5 queens of honeybees (A. mellifera L.) received 9.6 .times. 106 viable spores of B. larvae White. The 6th one was used as a control. All queens, after death, were dissected and their alimentary canals were analyzed bacteriologically. The result was reisolation of the same bacterium carried internally by the queen honeybees, except for the control. The average number of spores isolated was 1.2 .times. 104. The isolated bacteria caused American foulbrood AFB infection and disease. Some of the spores remained in the queens' intestinal tracts longer than the period which was spent by the queens in the wooden screened cage. Isolated spores from the alimentary canal of queens after their death were capable of causing AFB disease .
