Several published methods were studied for isolating resin acids by forming crystalline salts with amines, and their purity was checked by UV spectroscopy and TLC. It was found that diethylamine is not a specific reagent for isolating neoabietic acid as claimed in the literature, although it does produce mixtures rich in this acid.
