Of 156 dogs, 34 (21.6%) were found to be infected with adult Dirofilaria immitis PM; 18 of these were amicrofilaraemic. The ELISA was positive in 28 of the infected dogs and negative in 6; however, 5 of the latter had microfilariae, and it is recommended that ELISA be used in conjunction with examination for microfilariae. Thirty dogs negative PM were also positive to ELISA; possible reasons are suggested.
