Within a group of 30 newborn calves, 7 with diarrhoea due to Escherichia coli serotypes O126, B16 and O114B, and 12 healthy calves were given acidophilus milk. 4 of the infected calves were cured, but in one of these the infection recurred 48 h after cessation of treatments; the 12 healthy calves all developed diarrhoea which was cured but frequently recurred. 5 of 11 untreated calves developed diarrhoea, but recurrence of the disease was less frequent than in treated animals.
